Composer Interview: Ian Hultquist and Sofia Hultquist (The First Monday in May, Silicon Cowboys, My Blind Brother) [VIDEO]

Today we chat to Ian Hultquist and Sofia Hultquist, two composers and musicians based in Los Angeles, who have recently scored the documentary The First Monday in May, which opened the Tribeca Film Festival. They’ve also worked together on the scores for the documentary Silicon Cowboys and the comedy/drama My Blind Brother (starring Jenny Slate, Adam Scott, Zoe Kazan, and Nick Kroll), both of which were shown at the South by Southwest festival. Ian was a former member of the indietronica band Passion Pit before moving into full time film composing, and Sofia runs the company Drum & Lace, where she focuses on composing bespoke music for fashion campaigns and presentations. Ian and Sofia are also married, if you hadn’t guessed!

Ian_Paris_2016 From Ian’s official website: Ian Hultquist is a California-born, Chicago-raised composer and musician living in Los Angeles. He studied film scoring at Berklee College of Music, where he married his love of electronic and rock music, with his love of film, and began to develop his unique composing style. He also met his wife and fellow composer, Sofia, and became one of the founding members of the band Passion Pit.

He began with work on numerous commercials and short films, but it wasn’t long before his first full-length scoring credits, with the documentary IVORY TOWER and haunting and pensive score to the movie ANIMALS. Hultquist’s film and TV work includes commercials for brands like Samsung and Honda, the Battlefield Hardline 360 trailer, and films including THE DIABOLICAL (2015 SXSW selection) and the documentary THOUGHT CRIMES (2015 Tribeca Film Festival selection), MEMORIA, and BURNING BODHI.

From Sofia’s Drum and Lace website: Sofia Hultquist was raised in Florence, Italy and received her Undergraduate Degree from Berklee College of Music (Film Scoring & Composition*) and a Masters Degree in Music Technology & Composition from New York University. With an insatiable creative vision, she melds her penchant for beauty and fashion with her life-long love of music, resulting in unique and innovative music content.

Through Drum & Lace, Sofia  composes & creates original and licensable music by uniting her two passions – music & fashion. With a love and affinity for up-and-coming (and established) designers, D & L strives to make music part of a designer’s vision.
